NOA2210 NUCAPS Support Scientist

I.M. Systems Group, Inc. (IMSG) (www.imsg.com), a science and technical company supporting U.S. Federal Government, located in Rockville, Maryland is currently seeking to hire a Support Scientist to join our team efforts to support NOAA/NESDIS/Center for Satellite Applications Research (STAR).  IMSG supports STAR in applied science research and development efforts in a semi-research and semi-operational working environment along with U.S. government scientists, visiting scientists, and other contractors.  This task is to provide science, programming, and algorithm development support for the NOAA Unique Combined Atmospheric Processing System (NUCAPS) operational retrieval algorithm that utilizes hyperspectral infrared sounder instrument data in conjunction with the data from Microwave satellite sounding instruments.

General Requirements/Duties:

• Responsibilities include algorithm maintenance and improvement, development of new operational products, extension of the algorithm to new satellite sensor systems, calibration/validation activities to assess retrieval performance. 
• Work with NOAA government staff, interact with NUCAPS stakeholders, participate in algorithm and product readiness reviews, documentation, presentations and publications.  

Qualifications:

• MS/PhD with formal course work in atmospheric science, physics, mathematics and computer programming
• Experience in remote sensing retrieval methods and radiative transfer models, especially using infrared and/or microwave measurements
• Strong mathematical background
• 3+ years of experience in Fortran
• 3+ years of experience of IDL and other graphic tools (Matlab, Python, etc.)
• Familiarity with scientific data formats such as HDF, netCDF, and GRIB
• Experience with shell scripting
• Experience with satellite data product retrieval algorithms and strong programming skills
• Teamwork, strong inter-personal skills
• Strong communication skills, publications and conference presentations
• Knowledge of AI and Machine learning techniques
