I M. Systems Group, Inc. (IMSG), a Federal Government contractor, is seeking candidates to support the Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) located in College Park, MD. This position will support the unification of the Weather Information Statistical Post Processing System (WISPS) and the Unified Post Processor (UPP) into a single, re-engineered, state-of-the-art software system capable of post-processing numerical weather prediction (NWP) data generated from the Unified Forecast System (UFS). The successful applicant will coordinate this development effort between EMC and the Meteorological Development Laboratory (MDL) within the National Weather Service (NWS).

    • Integrate the WISPS into the UPP software system using modern software engineering practices to create a unified post processing software package for the UFS community.
    • Test, refine, and optimize the unified software package on multiple high performance computing (HPC) systems in coordination with MDL and EMC personnel and project managers.
    • Create both in-line code documentation and community-available user’s guides.
    • Develop timelines and schedules for transitioning the software to operational implementation as well as scientific benchmark evaluations.
    • Present training on software usage to both internal and external users, as needed.

At least an M.S. or equivalent experience in Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, or other related physical or mathematical sciences is required with several years of experience in the area of NWP, statistical post-processing and calibration, and software engineering.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Requirements:

    • Experience with developing, executing, and post-processing NWP models on HPC systems.
    • Experience with developing, executing, and maintaining NWP statistical post-processing software.
    • Knowledge of NWP statistical post-processing and calibration techniques, such as Model Output Statistics (MOS), multiple linear regression, and neural networks.
    • Knowledge of modern, object-oriented programming with FORTRAN, Python, C/C++, and familiarity working with shell scripts in a UNIX environment.
    • Knowledge of common meteorological data formats, such as BUFR, NetCDF, HDF, and GRIB.
    • Experience with modern software development, project management, and documentation platforms, such as Git, Redmine, and Doxygen.
    • Experience with re-engineering and merging legacy software systems into new, state-of-the-art software through standard software design techniques.
    • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently in a team environment and communicate effectively using good oral and written communication skills.

Candidates must be a U.S. Citizen or Green Card Holder to qualify (please indicate in your cover letter).

Please indicate your timeline of availability and preferred salary level for consideration.
