  • Overview

    I.M. Systems Group, Inc. (IMSG), www.imsg.com (http://www.imsg.com/), a Federal Government Contractor, is seeking to fill a position for a Support Scientist to work at NOAA's Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) located in College Park, MD.  The successful candidate will support the EMC in transitioning research and development work related to ensemble and probabilistic forecasting into operational use.

    Responsibilities

    Depending on requirements, the candidate will work on NCEP’s future global ensemble forecast system (GEFS) to improve the performance of weeks 3&4 (sub-seasonal) forecasts and high impact weather (HIW) prediction. The candidate will be required to work closely with EMC’s ensemble project team, developers within EMC working on coupled models, scientists within other NOAA labs, and key stakeholders in the broader community to improve numerical guidance in the time range of weeks 3 and 4 through applying stochastic physics and representation of uncertainty in model physical processes.

    Qualifications

    Education

    • PhD. or M.S. with two or more years of relevant experience in Atmospheric Science, or a related physical or applied mathematical science.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Experience working with numerical weather prediction (NWP) models and probabilistic forecasting.
    • Experience in two or more of the following areas:
    • the interaction of atmosphere, land, ocean and sea ice;
    • tropical climate dynamics and variability;
    • modeling with physical parameterizations and/or stochastic perturbations;
    • assessing and representing model-related forecast uncertainties; or
    • statistical post-processing and probabilistic verification.
    • Experience running complex numerical models and processing large amounts of NWP output on mainframe supercomputers and/or workstations in a FORTRAN/UNIX environment.
    • Experience using advanced statistical techniques and display/visualization tools.
    • Ability to obtain all necessary security clearances for access to NCEP operational computer systems (must be a permanent resident or US citizen).

    Desired Skills:

    • Work well in a team environment and to be able to meet deadlines and client requirements.
    • Good written and oral communication skills.
    • Those familiar with NOAA high performance computing (HPC) systems in general and NCEP systems in particular will have an advantage.
    • Those familiar with the current GEFS will have an advantage.
