Overview

I.M. Systems Group, Inc. (IMSG), www.imsg.com<http://www.imsg.com/>, a Federal Government Contractor is seeking to fill a full-time position supporting the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP).  The contractor will support the Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) of the NCEP in maintaining the NCEP Unified Post Processing (UPP) system. The candidate will work closely with scientists and engineers at EMC and collaborators/customers throughout NOAA to develop new products and to improve/maintain existing operational products.

Responsibilities

The candidate will perform the functions of the job in a high-quality, independent and collaborative way, assisting in managing projects, and developing and applying innovative methods for the primary work areas below:

  • Develop, test, and evaluate post processing products associated with each operational upgrade
  • Design, setup and execution of pre-implementation tests for periodic operational post processing upgrades
  • Developing advanced scripts for flexible end-to-end system integration and automation, and allow for additional functionalities

Qualifications

  • Extensive practical application of computing languages such as FORTRAN and C, geophysical data formats (NetCDF, GRIB, BUFR etc.), and graphical display programs such as GRADS, GEMPAK, MATLAB, IDL, etc.
  • Extensive experience in developing programs and scripts using FORTRAN and UNIX
  • Experience in advanced scripting languages (e.g., UNIX, PERL, ksh, Python, Ruby etc.)
  • Experience in model testing and evaluation and/or knowledge of verification principles.
  • Basic knowledge in MPI parallel programing
  • Ability to analyze/plot and verify model output independently
  • Basic knowledge of the physical and mathematical basis of geophysical modeling and experience running a Numerical Weather Prediction model
  • Demonstrated skill in communicating effectively with scientists of diverse backgrounds on technical details of the work plan and to present results accurately and clearly in both oral and written form
  • Ability to work in fast paced environment
  • Ability to work independently and in the team environment
  • Initiative to work on complex problems and solve problems creatively
  • Demonstrated skill in performing tasks requiring organization and attention to detail

  

Desired Skills: 

  • At least 2-3 years experiences in analyzing and post processing meteorological data
  • At least 2-3 years experiences in developing software using FORTRAN and Shell script languages
  • At least 1 year of experience working with MPI codes
  • Experiences with using plotting software such as GrADS and GEMPAK
  • Experience with high-performance computing
  • Familiarity with operational Numerical Weather Prediction and forecasting environment
  • Experience with developing post-processing and verification tools for NWP models
